Gold goes to Canada, the only true super-power of world women’s hockey. In the final it overtakes Sweden with 4-1 (2-0/2-0/0-1) who struggles and opposes a very respectable, active and brave resistance.
The Swedes, already defeated by the North Americans by 8-1 in the preliminary round, do their best in defence, always trying to build actions, but the Canadians, at least in two occasions, do not give way.

Yevgenia Medvedeva-Abruzova was tapped on the shoulder by teammate Yulia Chepalova for the final exchange, and they briefly made eye contact.

The Russians knew they were back in the race. Medvedeva-Abruzova then had the huge task of making up 12 1/2 seconds on the leading Germans. She used a gutsy final leg in challenging conditions to take control, then skated all alone through the final stretch of the stadium to lift Russia to gold in the women's 4 x 5-kilometer relay Saturday.

Russians blame the Chinese for stealing their training techniques.

Europeans complain the Americans win the "new sports" with money and judges and the Americans are gunning for the Austrians in the Alps.

The Olympic political map is by no means simple.

New enmities are born out of old friendships, and with the United States winning more medals at Winter Olympics, rivalry between two continents has become fierce.

Up there, on the Olympic podium, there is a girl called Hannah Teter.
She is nineteen years old with a candid smile, an American with an unbridled willingness to win despite her young age, almost the same age as the phenomenon Shaun White. She has now also entered in the half pipe elite. Four years after Kelly Clark, it is yet another American to put the gold medal round her neck and could not be otherwise due to the technical difference with respect to other athletes of other countries. Tonight in USA House there will be a celebration, because behind the high score (46.4) of the starlet from Belmont, her compatriot Gretchen Bleiler followed suit (43.4), followed by the able Norwegian Kjersti Buaas, a well-deserved bronze medal thanks to a fantastic second run (42.0).

It was 50 years ago this month that the Soviet Union swept to victory in its first Winter Olympics in the Italian Alpine resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, immediately establishing itself as a winter sports powerhouse.

But with the collapse of the Soviet sports machine and persecution fears stemming from the controversy-ridden 2002 Salt Lake City Games, few expect a triumphal return to the Italian slopes and ice rinks as Russian athletes begin their medals quest this Saturday at the 20th Winter Games in Turin.
