Women’s Hockey Group A: Canada Russia 12-0

Feb 13 2006
The Canadians, after the 16-0 inflicted upon Italy have also buried Russia by 12-0. 28 goals made in two matches, none taken, two shut-outs with Kim St-Pierre against the Italians and Charline Labonte against the Russians captained by the powerful Ekaterina Pashkevich. The overall number of shots on the goal were 43 to 17 for the Canadians (19 to 7 in the first half). Against Italy they had been 66 to 5 (with the splendid performance of Italian goalie Debora Montanari who saved a total of 38 out of 47 Canadian shots).

Wickenheiser, Ouellette, the captain Botterill and team-mates got their win secured from the outset with a partial score 7-0. Two goals for the extremely propulsive number 2 Meghan Agosta and for the “sniper” 7, Cherie Piper, then from Sunohara, Goyette and Wickenheiser . The Canadian pressure in the Russians’ third was constant and continuous leading regularly to goals; the winning combinations finalized with lighting one-timer speed; nearly always with two Canadians close to the adversaries’ goal, with no problem in the inferiorities because pressure and game control were never lost. Russia managed to engage Charline Labonte on the ground with Pashkevich and the dangerous and slippery Tatiana Sotnikova.

In the second period there was a little more action from Russia, with Aleksandrova saving goals consistently, the Russians creating something both in the goal area and from a distance, with Sotnikova, Gladysheva, Permyakova, whilst the defence held, especially thanks to the tenacious Alena Khomic. In any case the Russian resistance lasted 7 minutes, then a diagonal slash across the centre by Ouellette was picked up quickly and knocked in the goal in the wink of an eye by Katie Weatherston. The 9-0 in power-play arrived with Agosta after a triple consecutive “bombardment” from Aleksandrova who performed a miracle, twice. The 10-0, in the third period, was again thanks to Piper with a swift right back under the crossbar. Rarely did the Canadians allow a puck on a stick into their area. Vaillancourt with “wrist” under the crossbar and Carla Macleod with ice-scraping slap from a distance delivered the final 12-0.

Today for Group A Sweden should get another two points against Italy which would get them in the semi-finals. To the be disputed tomorrow with the formidable, beautiful Canadian war machine confirming its group leadership: a lead which should mean avoiding the United States in semi-final (Finland permitting).

Plucky Slutskaya Settles for an Olympic Bronze
As she stood stone-faced on the medals podium, Irina Slutskaya couldn't even manage a smile or a wave. The bronze medal that was hanging around her neck felt like a lead weight. For the second Olympics, the Russian star failed as the final skater of the women's free program. Both times, the gold medal was within reach. Neither time could Slutskaya grab it.

Ice Dancers Make It 3 Out of 3 for Russia
Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov made it three out of three for Russian figure skaters at the Winter Olympics. Navka and Kostomarov gave Russia a gold medal hat trick -- pairs, men's and dance. No nation has swept the four skating events in one games. The Russians could be the first, with Irina Slutskaya highly favored in the women's competition when it was about to begin late Tuesday. Tanith Belbin and partner Ben Agosto snapped the U.S. medal drought in figure skating with a silver. Elena Grushina and Ruslan Goncharov of Ukraine won the bronze.

Ice Dancing: A Good Night for the Russians
Feb 21 2006 Yesterday was the end of ice dancing, in a close contest which elected the new Olympic champions. The gold went to the Russians Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov already unreachable with a record original dance. Their “Carmen”, even though marred with various imperfections, proved otherwise sufficiently seductive to award the performers a score of 101.37 bringing them to a total of 200.64 points, more than enough to ensure the Russian duo reach their objective their sights had been set on for the last few years.
