Ice Dancing: A Good Night for the Russians
Feb 21 2006
Yesterday was the end of ice dancing, in a close contest which elected the new Olympic champions. The gold went to the Russians Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov already unreachable with a record original dance. Their “Carmen”, even though marred with various imperfections, proved otherwise sufficiently seductive to award the performers a score of 101.37 bringing them to a total of 200.64 points, more than enough to ensure the Russian duo reach their objective their sights had been set on for the last few years.
Second place was American, with the success of the young ones, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto. They landed on the international scene last year with a silver in the world championships, but their participation here was in doubt until the last moment due to citizenship problems for Tanith. The two are a one of the couples which will certainly be the protagonists in the next four years. With their modern Flamenco, they got 98.17 points, for a total of 196.06. The third rung of the podium remained to the Ukrainian married couple Elena Grushina and Ruslan Goncharov with an Arab inspired programme skated delightfully earning an Olympic bronze medal with a good 99.17 points, bringing them to a total of 195.85.
The Italian couples’ evening was rather more fortunate than the previous had been, even though the success dreamt of to the last could no longer materialize. Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio found an extraordinary interior strength and addressed their public hoping to make up for the drop of the other night. To the sound of the “Prince of Egypt” they skated so well, precisely, moving and enchanting the public. One was led to wonder “if only yesterday they hadn’t blundered…”. So they came sixth, with a partial score of 92.95 and a final total of 183.46.
Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali showed a quality performance which led them to regain a good two positions with their programme on the notes of Morricone’s ‘Mission’. Intense as ever, fluid and seductive, they got 87.92 points, resulting in an overall 164.37. Tonight, the ladies’ short programme.
